The Puzzle Master: Project Manager Kristie Croft

Kristie Croft is a Senior Project Manager at Texas Materials. In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re asking her and other women at our facilities what brought them to the industry and why they love the work.

Tell us about yourself! I have a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science from Texas A&M University. I worked for seven years for a commercial construction company out of college. I have been working in heavy highway construction for the last 15 years.

I mostly manage the projects that we execute for the state and for local municipalities. I am responsible for the financials and safe execution of the projects.

What drew you to a career in construction? I started as an engineering major in school but decided there was much more fun to be had in the construction department. I experience a great sense of accomplishment after building something tangible from a set of drawings and directions.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love solving puzzles and this job has a lot of them. Whether it is forecasting financials, troubleshooting inefficiencies, working with different personalities, etc. I am challenged with new puzzles to solve every day. Some might take 15 minutes, and some might take 2 years, but each keeps me coming back for more.

I have had the privilege to work with so many who have been willing to share their experiences and knowledge with me. I am grateful for superintendents and supervisors who have been patient and shared their insights and understanding of the business.

Any advice for women considering a career in this industry? My advice for future women is the same for future men in construction. Be confident, dignified and respectful of those you work with. We are all such different people with a myriad of different backgrounds.
