Multiple industrial plants relied on Luna Road, but it was deteriorating from heavy use.
Years of heavy truck traffic had severely degraded Luna Road; a critical industrial access route supporting an asphalt plant, two ready-mixed concrete plants, an aggregate facility, and several recycling yards.
In 2024, Texas Materials partnered with the City of Dallas to deliver Super Sand Mix (SSM); an innovative, high-performance asphalt mix engineered with asphalt-coated fibers specially designed to handle heavy truck traffic.

The Mix that Doesn't Quit.
At the heart of the project was SSM, our own proprietary asphalt mix that is the result of more than 15 years of research and development. SSM is designed with more than 42% of the virgin binder replaced by recycled and repurposed components, including four key materials: Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), infused fibers, fortified sand, and used tire rubber.
This approach significantly lowered material costs for the city. Through our innovative use of repurposed materials, Texas Materials was able to save the city over $50,000 while building a more durable road; all the while helping divert waste that would otherwise fill up area landfills:
Diverted approximately 13,200 used tires from landfills
Recycled 1,200 tons of asphalt-coated fiber waste
Reused 1,000 tons of specialty sand
The Best Research for the Best Results
To ensure long-term resilience, Texas Materials carried out rigorous performance testing throughout the project. Additionally, the use of Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology allowed for significantly lower production and placement temperatures, facilitating easier compaction and expediting project completion.
