Paving the Way for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Arlington
The City of Arlington, TX, was chosen for the IndyCar Grand Prix. The roads needed to be ready.
In March, 2026, Arlington TX hosted the inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington. The race covered a 2.73-mile, 14-turn street circuit with a mile-long straightaway. The track needed to safely and reliably withstand speeds approaching 180 miles per hour.
IndyCar selected Texas Materials as the general contractor for this project. Another CRH Americas company, Oldcastle Infrastructure, was selected as the key provider for concrete safety barriers surrounding the course. The goal? Transform Arlington’s streets into a temporary, professional-grade racetrack and bring world-class racing through the heart of the city.
The street circuit was designed by specialist Tony Cottman to go through Arlington’s entertainment district. The lengthy course took drivers past three iconic venues: AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, and Choctaw Stadium.
High Performance Asphalt for High Performance Cars
The project required early coordination, precise planning, and performance testing with the IndyCar team to ensure Texas Materials could pave the pit area and the start-finish lanes with minimal disruption to local businesses or the broader project.
The asphalt mix design needed to withstand the extreme demands of racing, including intense heat and friction. To meet these requirements, Texas Materials produced custom, high-performance asphalt mixes for all surfaces. We coupled this advanced mix with precision paving techniques to achieve a one-eighth-inch tolerance to guarantee accurate, consistent track elevation.
Building Essential Barriers
At high speeds, safety is key. Part of turning everyday roadways into a racetrack is ensuring the safety of both drivers and spectators. Oldcastle Infrastructure was uniquely positioned to collaborate with IndyCar’s engineering team for the custom concrete barriers. The installation of the barrier around the track was quick and efficient, thanks to a proprietary interlocking system. This guaranteed all 2,800 of the 10.5-ton barriers were in place before the race began.
