FIRST AID FOR ASPHALT BURNS

COOL the asphalt cement and affected body parts IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT DELAY.

Methods of cooling (in order of preference)

Cooling Methods

1. Completely submerge affected area in ice water;
2. Completely submerge affected area in tap water;
3. Place affected area under running water.

CAUTION: DO NOT apply ice directly to affected area.

LEAVE cooled asphalt cement on affected area. Use any available water, cooler than body temperature while arranging for better cooling.

Large Surface Area Burns

Burns to Hands or Feet, Large Surface Area Burns

For Molten Asphalt Cement Burns

LEAVE cooled asphalt cement on affected area.

Severe Asphalt Burns

Injury to head, face, hands, feet. Injury to large surface area of body. Victim shows nausea, faintness.
CALL 911, BRING VICTIM TO BURN CENTER OR EMERGENCY ROOM.

Minor Asphalt Burns

Injury to small areas of fairly insensitive flesh with a small quantity of asphalt cement.
CALL 911, BRING VICTIM TO EMERGENCY ROOM.

Treatment for Shock

Keep victim warm, cover in a blanket if possible.
AVOID PLACING BLANKET DIRECTLY OVER AFFECTED AREA

Signs of Shock:
• Cool, clammy skin
• Rapid breathing
• Altered mental status (confusion, faintness, agitation)

Important Warnings

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ASPHALT CEMENT with products containing solvents or ammonia.
Natural separation will occur in 48-72 hours. If necessary, for early removal, soak bandage in mineral oil and
place over affected area for 2-3 hours.
